Pharmacology
Triazole analog Zolium XR 1 is a member of the 1,4-benzodiazepine drug class. It functions as an anticonvulsant, hypnotic, and anxiolytic. Alprazolam's action is thought to be mediated by the benzodiazepine receptor and Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid (GABA) complex. Like other benzodiazepines, it has a dose-dependent CNS depressive effect that can range from mild impairment of task performance to hypnosis.
Dosage & Administration
- Patients taking multiple Alprazolam 0.25/0.5 mg dosage regimens should take Zolium 0.5/1 mg once daily, preferably in the morning.
- The tablets should not be chewed, crushed, or broken; they should only be taken whole.
- A dose of 0.25 to 0.5 mg administered three times per day should be used to start the treatment.
- The dose may be increased in increments of no more than 1 mg/day every 3 to 4 days, depending on the response.
- The daily dose shouldn't be higher than 4 mg.
- Periodic reassessment and consideration of dosage adjustment are necessary for these situations because occasionally patients with panic disorder may require as much as 10 mg per day to achieve a successful response.
- Dosage should be individualized for maximum beneficial effect with the lowest possible dose.
