Opsonil 50 is used to manage the following conditions:
- schizophrenia and other psychoses (especially paranoid), mania and hypomania
- anxiety psychomotor agitation excitement, violent or dangerously impulsive behavior
- intractable hiccup
- nausea and vomiting of terminal illness (where other medicines have failed or are not available)
- schizophrenia and autism (in children)
✅ Description:
Chlorpromazine works as an antagonist (blocking agent) on various post-synaptic receptors. It blocks dopaminergic receptors (D1, D2, D3, D4) and serotonergic receptors (5-HT1, 5-HT2) to help reduce symptoms of psychosis and mania, as well as have anxiolytic, antidepressant, and anti-aggressive properties. It also has effects on histaminergic receptors (sedation, antiemetic action), alpha-1/alpha-2 receptors (lowers blood pressure), and muscarinic receptors (causes anticholinergic symptoms). Additionally, chlorpromazine has mild antidepressant and antiparkinsonian effects due to its weak inhibition of dopamine reuptake.
✔️ Chlorpromazine belongs to the group of medicines known as antipsychotics. It is used to manage:
- Schizophrenia and other psychoses (especially paranoid)

✔️ Dosage & Administration:
- Adults (General medicine & psychiatry):
- Oral: Average daily dose is 30–75 mg (for mild cases) or 75–100 mg (for more severe cases) in divided doses. In severe cases, the dose may be increased gradually to 900 mg or more per day.
- Surgery & anesthesia: 25–50 mg, administered 2–3 hours before anesthesia and every 4–6 hours after surgery.
- Children:
- Usual single dose: 1/4 mg per pound (1/2 mg/kg) orally, repeated every 4–6 hours if necessary. The typical daily dose for a 5-year-old child is 40 mg.
Elderly: More susceptible to adverse effects, starting dose should be about half the usual adult dose, with gradual increments.

- Decreased Chlorpromazine Levels: Food, alcohol, benztropine, and antacids may reduce absorption. Lithium and barbiturates increase chlorpromazine clearance.
- Increased Chlorpromazine Levels: Tricyclic antidepressants, CYP1A2 inhibitors (e.g., ciprofloxacin, fluvoxamine), and oral contraceptives may increase chlorpromazine plasma concentrations, potentially causing more side effects.

Pregnancy Category C: Reproductive toxicity observed in animal studies. Chlorpromazine is excreted in breast milk, so it is not recommended during breastfeeding unless the benefits outweigh the risks.

- Can cause drowsiness; avoid driving or operating machinery until this effect subsides.
- May provoke epileptic seizures in susceptible patients.
