The Varicella Virus Vaccine induces both cell-mediated and humoral immune responses to the varicella-zoster virus, though the exact contributions of these immune responses to protection from varicella are unknown.
✔️ Dosage & Administration
Each 0.5 mL dose is administered subcutaneously. For children (12 months to 12 years), the first dose is given at 12-15 months of age, with the second dose at 4-6 years of age. Adolescents (13 years and older) and adults receive two doses at a minimum interval of 4 weeks.
✔️ Interaction
Do not administer the vaccine to individuals with:
- Severe allergic reactions to any component of the vaccine (including neomycin and gelatin) or a previous dose of varicella-containing vaccine.
- Immunosuppression due to disease or medical therapy.
- Active febrile illness with a fever >38.5°C.
- Active, untreated tuberculosis.

The vaccine is contraindicated during pregnancy due to the risk of congenital varicella syndrome. It is unknown if the vaccine virus is excreted in human milk; therefore, the benefits of breastfeeding should be weighed against the mother's clinical need for the vaccine.

Use the supplied sterile diluent for reconstitution. After reconstitution, inspect for particulate matter and discoloration. Use the vaccine immediately after reconstitution, and discard if not used within 30 minutes. Do not freeze the reconstituted vaccine.

- Evaluate for immune competence in individuals with a family history of congenital or hereditary immunodeficiency.
