- Medicinal Part: Brown-grey powdered seed with a peppery odor.

Valerian: Valerian is an herb commonly used as a sleep aid, available in various commercial forms. The extract from Valeriana officinalis, a flowering plant native to Europe and Asia and also found in North America, contains over 150 active constituents. Valerian root extract includes the fresh or carefully dried subterranean parts of the plant, such as rhizomes, roots, and stolons.

5-Hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP): Converted "in vivo" to serotonin, a neuro-hormonal transmitter released by neurons in the brain, spinal cord, and sympathetic ganglia. It is derived from the seeds of the African plant Griffonia simplicifolia. 5-HTP, an aromatic amino acid naturally produced from L-tryptophan, is extracted commercially from these seeds.
Valerian Extract: Effective in treating mild-to-moderate sleeping disorders without adverse effects on REM sleep or significant hangover effects. Valerian has sedative-hypnotic, anxiolytic, antidepressant, anticonvulsant, and antispasmodic properties.
5-HTP primarily increases serotonin levels within the central nervous system. It has also been shown to raise levels of other neurotransmitters and CNS chemicals, such as melatonin, dopamine, norepinephrine, and beta-endorphin, following oral administration.
Valepotriate in valerian binds to dopamine receptors. Valerenic acid appears to inhibit the enzyme system responsible for GABA catabolism in the central nervous system, thereby increasing GABA concentration and decreasing CNS activity.
Valerian extracts, containing amino acids and valeric acid, bind with the GABA-A receptor in the brain cortex. Valerian extract inhibits GABA uptake and stimulates its release, leading to increased GABA concentration in synaptic clefts. Valerenic acid may inhibit enzymes that break down GABA, thus elevating GABA levels and producing a CNS-depressing effect.

✔️ Interaction
- Carbidopa: Concurrent use may increase the risk of developing scleroderma-like illness in susceptible individuals.
- Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs) & Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs): Concurrent use may increase the risk of serotonin syndrome (symptoms include hypertension, hyperthermia, myoclonus, and mental status changes). Combining 5-HTP with SSRIs may enhance the risk of serotonergic side effects. Valerian may potentiate the sedative effects of barbiturates, alcohol, and benzodiazepines.

The World Health Organization (WHO) advises against using valerian for children under 18 year without medical supervision.
✔️ Pregnancy & Lactation
The safety of 5-HTP during pregnancy or lactation has not been established in controlled trials; therefore, it should not be used during pregnancy.
