Indications

Cream or ointment:

Therapy: In addition to systemic treatment for the following indications

Primary or secondary local infection

Incisional infection

Prophylaxis:

To prevent bacterial infection of burns, incisions and other local lesions

Exfoliation of the skin in case of hyperpigmentation , navel or circumcision area

Its use for abrasions, minor cuts and wounds prevents the development of infection and allows wound healing.

Solution:

For the prevention and treatment of superficial infections as well as for the degreasing of skin, mucous membranes and hypersecretory procedures

Gargling and rinsing: This is a pleasant-tasting solution used:

Pharmacology

Iodine Povidone is an iodine complex and a organic polymer of Povidone. It is also a spoiler. It is the only microbicide with this broad spectrum of activity. It is non-staining, has a long-lasting bactericidal effect, and is also active in the presence of soap, blood, serum, pus, mucus secretions and water.

Dosage & Administration

Cream or ointment:

For the treatment of infection: Apply once or twice daily or at dressing changes for a maximum of 14 days.

For the prevention of infection: Apply once or twice a week for as long as necessary. The affected skin should be cleaned and dried and can be covered with a dressing or bandage.

Solution: Apply full strength as often as needed as paint, spray, or wet soak. Maybe bandaged (where necessary).

Gargle & Mouthwash: Adults and children over 6 years of age: Use undiluted or diluted with an equal volume of warm water. Gargle or rinse with up to 10 mL for up to 30 seconds without swallowing. Repeat up to four times daily, for up to 14 consecutive days, or as advised by the Registered Dental Surgeon/Physician.

Surgical Scrub:

For Preoperative and Postoperative washing by Operating Personnel: Wet hands and forearms with water. Pour about 5 mL of Povidone Iodine Surgical Scrub on the palm of the hand and spread over both hands and forearms. Without adding more water, rub the Scrub thoroughly over all areas for about five minutes. Use a brush if desired. Clean thoroughly under fingernails. Add a little water and develop copious suds. Rinse thoroughly under running water. Complete the wash by scrubbing with another 5 mL of Povidone Iodine Surgical Scrub in the same way.

For Preoperative use on Patients: After the skin area is shaved, wet it with water. Apply Povidone Iodine Surgical Scrub (1 mL is sufficient to cover an area of 20-30 square inches), develop lather and scrub thoroughly for about five minutes. Rinse off by aid of sterile gauze saturated with water.

For use in the Physician's Office: Use for washing whenever a germicidal soap is required.

Powder: Apply a light dusting of powder to the affected area. When dry, this forms a protective antiseptic layer over the area treated. Or use as advised by the Registered Physician. There are no special dosage recommendations for children or elderly patients.

Interaction

It interacts with strong alkalis, sodium thiosulfate, sodium metabisulfite and thiomersal. Concomitant use with lithium therapy has been shown to have a hypothyroid effect.

Contraindications

It may cause hypersensitivity reactions. Routine use should be avoided in patients with thyroid disorders (especially colloid goiter, end-stage goiter, and Hashimoto's thyroiditis) or on lithium therapy. In patients with severe burns, serum iodide levels should be assessed because of possible hepatic and renal failure. Povidone iodine powder should not be used for severe tooth decay and in children under 2 years of age.

Side Effects

Povidone iodine may cause hypersensitivity reactions and irritation of the skin and mucous membranes. The use of povidone iodide for severe burns or other large areas of bare skin can cause systemic side effects such as metabolic acidosis, hypernatremia, and impaired renal function. It may interfere with thyroid function tests.

Pregnancy and Lactation

Povidone iodine creams, solutions and powders are not recommended during pregnancy due to the possibility of absorbing enough iodine which will affect the fetal thyroid gland. The American Academy of Pediatrics considers povidone iodine use generally compatible with breastfeeding. Consult a licensed physician. Regular use of mouthwashes and mouthwashes and surgical exfoliants should also be avoided in pregnant and lactating women.

Precautions and Warnings

Gargling and rinsing: Regular use should be avoided as prolonged use can lead to the absorption of large amounts of iodine. Do not use for more than 14 days. If sores or sores in the mouth do not heal within 14 days, see your dentist or doctor. It also should not be used by children under 6 years of age. Routine use should be avoided in patients receiving concomitant treatment with lithium.

Surgical Wound Scrubbing: Special care is required when applying the drug regularly to injured skin in patients with pre-existing renal impairment. Powder form: Caution should be exercised when used in known iodine sensitivities, although they do not usually react with povidone-iodine. Excess powder can be easily washed off with warm water. It should be used directly from the container. Not internally managed.
