Phenobarbital is a long-acting barbiturate used for its anticonvulsant and sedative-hypnotic properties, affecting GABAA receptors and calcium channels to elevate seizure thresholds and reduce seizure activity.
✔️ Dosage & Administration
Adults:
- Daytime sedative: 30-120 mg/day in divided doses
- Bedtime hypnotic: 100-320 mg
- Anticonvulsant: 50-100 mg 2-3 times daily
- Status epilepticus: 10-20 mg/kg IV
Children:
- Preoperative: 1-3 mg/kg
- Anticonvulsant: 1-6 mg/kg/day
- Status epilepticus: 15-20 mg/kg IV
Interactions Avoid concurrent use with alcohol or other CNS depressants.
