Renvista is the first orally administered HIF-PH inhibitor designed to stimulate erythropoiesis by increasing the body's natural production of erythropoietin. It also enhances iron regulation and reduces the effects of inflammation that suppress hemoglobin synthesis and red blood cell production by downregulating hepcidin.
Renvista belongs to the class of drugs used for hemolytic, hypoplastic, and renal anemia. Renvista is prescribed for the treatment of symptomatic anemia in adult patients associated with chronic kidney disease (CKD).

Roxadustat, the active ingredient in Renvista, is a hypoxia-inducible factor prolyl hydroxylase inhibitor (HIF-PHI) with anti-anemic properties. By inhibiting HIF-PH, an enzyme that degrades hypoxia-inducible factors (HIFs) under normal oxygen levels, it prevents HIF breakdown and enhances HIF activity. This results in increased production of endogenous erythropoietin, promoting red blood cell production and improving iron metabolism. Roxadustat also lowers hepcidin levels, ensuring better iron availability and hemoglobin synthesis, even in inflammatory conditions.
Roxadustat has been shown to enhance red blood cell production while keeping plasma erythropoietin levels within a near-normal physiological range. It helps improve iron absorption, transport, and hemoglobin synthesis, while also significantly reducing cholesterol levels, regardless of whether lipid-lowering agents are used.
Dose Adjustment:
Increase or decrease doses as required to maintain target Hb levels (10-12 g/dL). Adjustments must follow the dose adjustment sequence, with a minimum 4-week interval before making further changes.
Overdose
- Symptoms: May lead to transient increases in heart rate or excessively high hemoglobin levels.
- Management: Reduce or interrupt the dosage as needed. Note that Renvista is not removed via dialysis.
Missed Dose:
- If more than 24 hours remain before the next scheduled dose, take the missed dose immediately and continue as scheduled.
- If less than 24 hours remain, skip the missed dose and proceed with the next scheduled dose. Do not take two doses on the same day.
Tablets can be taken with or without food.
Renvista 70 works by reducing the acid produced in the stomach which helps in the relief of acid-related indigestion and heartburn.
Common side effects include hypertension, vascular access thrombosis, diarrhea, peripheral edema, hyperkalemia, and nausea.
Roxatidine is used in the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease and peptic ulcer disease.
